Hermeneutics: How to Study and Interpret the Prophetic Word
by David James, presented at Jimmy DeYoung's Chattanooga Prophecy Conference – Spring, 2016. The term “hermeneutics … comes from the Greek word ‘hermēneia’ and the associated verb meaning ‘translate’ or ‘interpret.’ The term is found in 1 Corinthians 12:10 and 14:26 speaking of the spiritual gift of interpretation. Applied to biblical studies, hermeneutics speaks of the principles of interpreting Scripture. Hermeneutics goes further than exegesis, not only seeking to draw out the meaning of the text, but interpreting it using a wide range of interpretative methods appropriate to the genre and context, and includes the application of the text to everyday life. Put simply, it speaks of how to interpret Scripture for daily living.” (Mark J. Keown, Discovering the New Testament: An Introduction to Its Background, Theology, and Themes: The Gospels & Acts, vol. I [Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2018], 100.)
